OUR MOTHER'S DAY GIFT IDEAS
CURATED EXCLUSIVELY FOR BOSTINNO
. . . CAN REALLY BE USED FOR ANY DAY!
I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend (it was gorgeous in Boston) and quality time spent with their #1 mom!
We were so excited to get asked by BostInno to do a special feature for Mother's Day! If you missed out on getting inspired, these curated ideas really work for any mom, wife, aunt, girlfriend or sis for any occasion deserving of a little pamper and spoil!
When BostInno staff writer, Marian White, asked me to do a Mother's Day gift feature for her lifestyle column, I had only a few days to pull it all together! I immediately started brainstorming thoughtful and highly personalized gift ideas for the innovative and creative yet busy BostInno reader. I wanted to share my secret of pulling together gifts to create special, mini, memorable experiences. My gift ideas don't usually involve taking out the craft box, glue, glitter or scissors . . . who has time for 10-step DIY projects? I really believe you can make a big impact by creating thoughtful experiences around a single idea . . . You just have to package it, and deliver it in your own personalized way. This adds the unexpected part that makes it all worth while. (Trust me!)
The next thing I had to do was pitch and partner with the right photographer to help me capture my ideas. Given the subject, I really wanted to work with South End neighbor Cassandra Plummer. A mommy herself and photographer of families and babies, Cassie had the eye I needed to make my ideas come to life. Her and I had discussed collaborating in the past and I thought this was the perfect opportunity.
With no time to spare, I ran my ideas by Marian just a day later and thankfully she loved them all! With my big vision in mind, over the next two days, I was solely focused on curating products from some of my favorite stores close by: Hudson, Twelve Chairs and the newly opened Neatly Nested in South Boston.
Tip: Identify the type of person you are buying for, pick your favorite local shop that fits their personality, hobby or interest. You can't go wrong with local—and always thoughtful.
If you didn't have a chance to try these for Mother's Day, I hope you'll be inspired for another day!
IN-HOME, INTIMATE BRUNCH
No need for a reservation. Instead, invite your honoree over for brunch or head to her place! Stop by your favorite local bakery or formaggio (so no one has to cook!) and set up a private little brunch or charcuterie right at home. Set a beautiful table with things around your home (tableware, pillows, and throws!) to create a special experience. I like to add a little surprise at the honoree's place setting – something small that he or she won't be expecting. They'll appreciate your creativity and thoughtfulness, and you get to personalize every piece of it.
Tip: Color coordinating helps create a cohesive look and feel, but not never necessary!
FULL OF SURPRISE & NO WRAPPING NECESSARY
This can work for him too! Think about what might make his or her life easier? If he or she is always on the go, or traveling, pick up a fabric zipper pouch (popular everywhere!) and fill it with their favorite products or travel essentials. Easy for them to toss in their bag, fill it with a mix of beauty products, functional gadgets or fun accessories! I like to include things they might not buy for themselves or items they've always wanted to try. The best part: they will always think of you when they use it.
And Gift wrap included! No need to wrap this gift. Add a bow or tie a tag to it and you have a gift package ready to go!
Tip: You can create a theme like beauty, travel, garden, work, or work out, and surprise them with something totally fun and unexpected!
PAMPER & SPOIL
This is definitely loved anytime of the year! Pamper your mom, wife or lover by leaving her sweet gifts by her bedside table! Clear off the clutter and arrange your thoughtful gifts to help take time for herself.
Set soft florals like peonies on the nightstand with a small journal and pen . . .
. . . Or splurge on a glass tray or lacquer box for her to keep her lip gloss, hand lotion and hair ties. Scented products and fresh towels paired with a new novel will be sure to get her to relax. Choose things that are going to help her make time for relaxing. She'll be so surprised when she wakes up in the morning or gets ready to curl up for bed!
MADE FROM THE HEART
This is especially sweet on Mother's Day and Father's Day because nothing says more than anything homemade from the children. It was true when we were kids and it always will be. If your mom/dad has grandchildren or you have children yourself, stop by your favorite home decor store, or even a discount store, and pick up a small gathering of frames in various sizes and styles. Then, ask your children to draw a portrait of their grandma/grandpa or mom/dad, frame them, ship them or hang them right on that bare wall! They will love their little gallery of their favorite artists. Low tack, adorable and an original keepsake.
Tip: Keep the frames simple so you can really highlight the artist's work!
USE YOUR WORDS
This one never fails. Whether it's Mother's Day, your best friend's 30th birthday, for a lover or brother—everyone feels good when they find out how much they are loved, appreciated and thought about. Wherever they are near or far, this will be sure to make them smile (or even shed a happy tear!) So, instead of sending a traditional card, grab a piece of paper and write them a thoughtful message, important promise or remind them of your fondest memory. Then, pick up a small to medium size frame, slide in your message, present it to them or mail it their way—a handwritten message from you they'll have forever.
